His obituary in The News-Messenger provides some insight into his “World’s Greatest” title: He was born in Ballville Township in 1876 and Weaver has this to say about him in the book: “Guy Emerson grew up on the river. As a young inquisitive boy, he fished, swam, skipped rocks and plied the river rapids on a homemade raft during the warm summer months. During the bitterly cold Ohio winters, Guy skated on and fished the frozen river.”Īt the same time, Emerson, like so many other young farm boys, was learning to shoot a rifle to obtain food for the family and provide protection. Weaver - supported by the Sandusky County Historical Society and helped by the talents of his sister, Jill Weaver Sowers, and well-known historians Larry Michaels and Krista Michaels - tells the story of a man who performed at the top of his field for decades. Now, another Fremonter, Jim Weaver, has told Emerson’s story in a book that uses that tribute as its title, “The World’s Greatest Marksman.”
